What does it Mean to Be a Christian?

Discover who Jesus is, understand God's plan for your life, and take your first steps of faith.

Understanding the Gospel

1. We Have All Sinned

Sin separates us from God, and every person needs His grace and forgiveness.
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23

2. Jesus Died for Our Sins

God demonstrated His love by sending Jesus Christ to die for our sins and rise again, making salvation possible through Him.
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Corinthians 15:3-4

3. Salvation is a Gift of Grace

We cannot earn salvation through good works. We receive God's gift through faith in Jesus Christ.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6

How Do I Become a Christian?

Foundational steps to responding to God's invitation.

Believe in Jesus Christ

Believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He died for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead.
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
 Romans 10:9-10

Repent of Your Sins

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God, allowing Him to change the direction of your life.
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
Acts 3:19

Receive Jesus as Savior and Lord

Put your trust in Jesus, surrender your life to Him, and receive the forgiveness and new life He offers.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
John 1:12
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17

Follow Jesus in Obedience

Take the next steps of faith, including water baptism and becoming part of the church.
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 2:38-42
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 28:19-20

Are You Ready to Take that Next Step?

Pray this short prayer. This prayer is not a formula that earns salvation; it is an expression of faith and surrender to Jesus.
"Heavenly Father, I come to You recognizing that I have sinned and need Your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. I repent of my sins and place my faith in Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Forgive me, make me new, and help me follow You every day. Teach me to live according to Your Word and to walk in Your ways. Thank You for Your grace, Your mercy, and the new life You offer through Christ. In Jesus' name, Amen."
